Statement by Black & Asian Democratic Caucus and Minority Leader Vincent R. Felder on Last Night’s Shootings
ROCHESTER, NY – Last night as the Monroe County Legislature met, news broke that five teens had been shot in the City of Rochester. These occurrences are absolutely tragic and we must work towards addressing this violence. During the meeting, legislation was introduced by the Black & Asian Democratic Caucus and Minority Leader Vincent Felder and unanimously passed that will provide funding from the Community Contingency Fund to nonprofit organizations. Two of these organizations are ROC the Peace and Rise Up Rochester, groups dedicated to stopping gun violence in our city. “Collaboration between nonprofits and community leaders is important, and while the funding we provided is a start, it’s not nearly enough to combat the violence we are seeing in the city,” said Legislator Sabrina LaMar. “We must make sure these organizations are fully funded to be able to serve the community, especially at the County level.” We believe that providing direct resources to youth and community services creates a safer way of life and we are looking forward to the County supporting more legislation surrounding this issue. Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the children and their families affected by this tragedy and we look forward to better days ahead in the City of Rochester and Monroe County.
