D&C exposes Amy Maloy's alleged affair with former General Counsel Steven Carling

Updated: May 2

As the Rochester City School District tackles allegations of misconduct, more questionable behavior continues. In an article published by the Democrat & Chronicle, school board member Amy Maloy is under fire for an alleged affair with a former married district employee.

The D&C reported Amy Maloy had a consensual relationship with a district employee who reported directly to the board. According to the report, the relationship between Maloy and the other employee took place between October 2020 and February 2021 and consisted of four or five encounters in hotel rooms, according to the report. After it ended, Maloy lobbied to prevent the man from securing a promotion without a full open hiring process − something she said was in the interest of transparency and diversity in hiring, not revenge.

Our source states the employee is former RCSD General Counsel Steven Carling and Amy exposed the affair to Carling's wife after he ended the relationship.

D&C's reporter Justin Murphy stated the employee's name was not revealed because he was subordinate to Maloy, and there is no allegation he broke the district code of ethics. He is not accused of possible retaliation after the affair ended; he is not an elected official; and he was never sanctioned by the district or school board. He declined to comment.

Steven Carling left the RCSD in November of 2021 after eight years. He now works for Harris Beach PLLC, according to his LinkedIn page.
