Introduction

Remote and hybrid work has recently become a huge trend among both employers and employees. And why not? It helps reduce costs for both sides.

On top of that, working in the crypto and blockchain industry has become even more popular due to skyrocketing demand for qualified professionals. The moment you open a job portal, you're likely to notice job postings for engineers, developers, and customer support roles in crypto companies.

At the end of this article, I’ll share some links to crypto job boards, so stay with me until the end!

Although the highest demand is for crypto experts, even beginners can land a job in this space because there’s an abundance of opportunities.

For instance, if you don’t have crypto experience but are skilled in writing, you can easily find numerous job ads seeking people to write blog posts, social media content, privacy policies, or terms and conditions for crypto exchanges or startups. Similarly, marketing professionals are in demand because marketing in the crypto world operates on the same principles as traditional marketing.

But is it as straightforward and promising as it appears at first glance?

From personal experience, I can tell you that landing a legitimate job in the crypto industry is just as challenging—or as simple—as finding other online jobs.

The high demand for talent, the partially regulated nature of the market, and the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies and blockchain have created a fertile ground for online scammers.

The internet is full of fake crypto job postings created by scammers looking to exploit either your wallet or your personal information. Private data, for instance, has become a valuable commodity that scammers collect and sell to large corporations for targeted marketing campaigns.

So, how do you navigate the sea of scammers and find genuine job offers?

How to Spot a Scam Job Offer in Crypto

The first rule of thumb for anyone using the internet is: If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

For example, if someone offers you $10,000 to write tweets—even though you have no experience with Twitter and don’t even know how to use it—yet you still get hired, it’s 100% a scam. There’s no actual job involved.

Here are some key red flags to watch for in job ads:

Research the Company:

  • Check the company’s official website, the URL listed in the job posting, its social media profiles, and user reviews.

  • Pay close attention to whether the company has a legitimate registration or tax number. If it’s unregistered or newly established, proceed with caution.

Email Address:

  • Legitimate companies rarely use generic email domains like Gmail or Yahoo. They usually have personalized email addresses like name@company.com.

Poorly Written Job Ads:

  • If the ad is riddled with grammatical errors and typos, it’s a big red flag.

Contact Via WhatsApp or Telegram:

  • If you’re contacted through platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram—or even via email without initiating contact yourself—it’s almost always a scam.

Requests for Upfront Payments:

  • No legitimate company will ask you to pay for certifications, training fees, or other "costs" upfront. Even if the requested amount is as small as $1, it’s a scam.

Protect Your Personal Information:

  • Never share sensitive personal information online unless you’re absolutely certain about the company and role.

Verify the Recruiter:

  • Cross-check the recruiter’s details with the company to confirm if they’re a legitimate employee.

How to Secure a Crypto Job

Now that you know how to spot scams, let’s discuss what you need to do to land a legitimate job in the crypto and blockchain industry.

Craft an Impressive Resume and Cover Letter:

  • Your resume should be up-to-date, but the accompanying cover letter is even more important.

  • For example, I landed a crypto-related job in Dubai solely because of my personalized, engaging, and slightly humorous cover letter. It caught the attention of the company’s founder after the HR team flagged it as intriguing.

  • A personal touch can make the difference between being hired or rejected.

Build a Portfolio:

  • Regardless of your field, you need a portfolio of your work to showcase your professionalism and expertise.

Networking:

  • Connect with other professionals in the crypto and blockchain industry through social media platforms like LinkedIn. Networking is invaluable in this field.

Learn New Skills:

  • Continuously upgrade your skill set to stand out to potential employers.

Master Online Communication Tools:

Educate Yourself About Crypto:

  • Take time to learn about cryptocurrencies and blockchain, even if it means studying in your personal time.

Be a Team Player:

  • While you’ll work from home most of the time, you’ll also collaborate with team members daily. Balance being an independent worker with being a cooperative team member.

Transfer Existing Skills to Crypto:

  • Adapt what you know from other industries to the crypto space. For instance, if you’ve done marketing for retail, apply those principles to crypto and blockchain products.

Maintain Professionalism and Positivity:

  • Always respect your employer, be professional, and strive to be a friendly, communicative colleague.
