Often we tend to forget about ourselves in the midst of all of the crazy curve balls life throws at us, but we still need to find the time to recuperate and ground ourselves. Staying grounded is not letting the uncontrollable shit that happens in your life, decide how you’re going to live it. Learning how to contain the lemons in your life is the first part of taking care of yourself. Let’s explore the different ways of self-care to promote positivity and keep your energy leveled.
Self-care can be any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a pretty simple concept, it’s easier said than done and kind of hard to remember, but we have to take care of ourselves first. It’s okay to make yourself a priority.
When I think of self-care I think of doing an activity or focusing on something fun and positive in order to make sure you’re coping with the not so fun moments that happen in your life. It is important to find that balance between what you can and can’t control so life doesn’t get the best of you or make you feel like you don’t have it together. Self-care helps you feel damn good about yourself and help you push through the tough shit.
Personally, I struggle with anxiety and moderate to severe depression so I require a lot of self-care. For my health, I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, drink a lot of water, and stay active (gym, walking, yoga, or swimming). For my emotional and mental well-being, I go to therapy 2-3x a month to develop coping skills for my mental illnesses I previously mentioned. I do a lot of other things for self-care including getting my nails, feet, and hair done, face masks, watching my favorite movie, shopping for sneakers, painting, writing, coloring, reading, eating, going out with friends, listening to music, and even sleeping.
Self-care isn’t limited because everyone has their different ways of dealing with things and taking care of themselves. You just have to figure out what works for you and makes you happy.
Once you figure out what brings out that smile and glow, do that. Be committed your happiness and peace by focusing on self-care. Always choose YOU. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
